Development of the tourism market in Tuscany
In 2006 the presence of tourists increased by about 7.6% from 2005 and the amount exceeded the limit of 40million (41.1million) the highest value ever recorded in Tuscany. The excellent performance of Tuscany's tourism in 2006 is due to both Italian and foreign components. The Italian presence increased by 6.8% (+1.38million people) and the foreign presence increased by 8.4% (+1.51 million people). The reasons are as follows:
1) The year 2006 was excellent and tourism increased by 7.6%
2) The Tuscan performance was better than the Italian performance- the increase in Italy of 3.7% was less than half of that of in Tuscany (7.6%)
Concerning the area of foreign tourism Tuscany received 8.4% whereas Italy received 6.4% - a difference of 2% .
Concerning the domestic tourism there was a gap of over 5.1% with Tuscany growing by 6.8% and Italy only1.7%
International tourism
The strong influence of foreign tourism in Tuscany has benefited all the tourist resources in the region and the increase exceeds 7% (the sea +9.9%, spa villages and countryside +9.4%, mountains +7%). Only the art cities achieved a lower result, just 6.3% but we must remember that this is the resource that first gave signs of recovery and that in the last three years saw an increase of more than 20%.
The growth of foreign presence has generated an increase of 23% in holiday accommodation excluding hotels (B&B, Agriturismo, rental apartments) and 30.7% in super luxury accommodation.
National tourism
Regarding national tourism, it must be stressed that Tuscany hosts 10.2% of trips by Italians and is at the top of the list of best Italian regions. The growth of Italian tourism is concentrated at the sea (+8.9%) in the countryside (+9.6%) art cities (+5.8%) mountains (+3%) and spa villages (+0.7%).
